Lower Department (KS3)

In the Lower Department, we have developed a curriculum that is relevant, fun and accessible to help remove any barriers to learning thereby allowing engagement and progress to take place. Our curriculum gives us the opportunity to teach a range of subjects in an innovative way ensuring that all pupils are given the opportunity to express their views using a variety of communication tools such as PECS and Makaton.

Our curriculum involves the three main core areas and subjects such as ICT, Humanities, PSHEC, RE, PE and Arts Award. Sensory and exploratory activities are used a tool to enhance the curriculum and develop communication and social interaction skills. We support our pupils to develop academically, personally and socially, which continues throughout their time at Durants school as they move through the departments.

Across the Lower department teachers use the local environment such as visits to parks, shops and cafés to support pupils’ awareness and understanding of the local area as well as supporting curriculum areas. Lower Department classes also attend swimming sessions at a local swimming pool. We are a fun and inclusive department and there are lots of opportunities for classes to join together for trips and collective worship.
